Anyone have any tips for drawing pictures with light sources?

im trying to extend my drawing skills by learning how to include things like ambient light sources and glowing objects into my artwork. im having trouble getting things to appear illuminated. anyone have any ideas or tips that might help. im trying to stick with colored pencils, and graphite as meduims
