Red tailed OR rainbow shark?

Yes you can have one, I have a red-tailed shark in a 26 gallon tank. Yes they are obviously aggressive but with hiding places and if the other fish have a nice school, it isn't as aggressive plus the aggression hardly causes any stress. You'll be fine. I personally like the red-tailed shark because I like how it looks better.
